Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
