Nigeria's stunning new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has landed in the crosshairs of local power politics during the period it was scheduled to – but did not manage – to welcome visitors to the general public for the initial occasion.

The Ambitious Project

The large-scale campus sits in the center of Benin's urban center, capital of the southern region of Edo – and contains an excavation site and facilities planned by renowned Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye, most famous for the Washington African American Museum that began operations in Washington DC in 2016.

It has been 60 months in the creation – and is designed to showcase both the past and the present of cultural innovation in the area known for the historic artworks, historical pieces stolen from the royal palace by British troops in the 19th Century.

"I want us to have a major economic impact on communities in the vicinity," he told media outlets, noting that he wanted to make the city "a tourism center."

Mowaa, a non-profit Nigerian institution, envisions itself establishing in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing over $80m each year to the regional creative economy through partnerships and programming.

Financial Support and Government Issues
