Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
